All  Mailed Posts For March 2014

The purpose of this News Commentary Section is to assist the faithful in recognizing the signs and lies of These End Times. Somehow, many self appointed Shepherds of These Times are trying to convince the faithful that the Apocalypse will be, using street slang, "a piece of cake" for them and "hell" for all others. They are led to believe that if they "do this" and "do that" they do not have a thing to worry about (of course, so long as that between the "do this" and the "do that" they send in a donation).

Others lead the faithful to believe that "All Is Well" and will continue to be, of course, as long as those donations keep coming in...

Obama rejected using cyberattacks to paralyze Syrian military. (1)

Senior administration officials say Obama turned down use of cyber attack fearing precedent move would set, 'NYTimes' reported.

During a series of crisis meetings on Syria throughout the course of the conflict there, as it slowly turned from an Arab Spring uprising to a fractious civil war, US President Barack Obama's national security team presented him with new, powerful tools that would ground the air force of embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad and effectively turn his lights out: cyber weapons, never before used on the battlefield.

In a New York Times report published Monday and written by David Sanger, who last year released enterprising coverage in that paper on covert US cyber operations against Iran, senior administration officials confirm that the president turned down those cyber attack options against Assad, fearing the precedent their use might set in future conflicts should he proceed.

While an advanced attack would not completely debilitate Assad – he has off the grid capabilities that would remain intact – it would significantly cripple his ability to conduct air-strikes, of the like he has repeatedly ordered against highly populated civilian areas.

miguel de Portugal comments: Considering what we read above.... Maybe the photograph of President Obama we shared with you last February 21st was indeed a message from God.

We do not think that any other comment is necessary other than to state that it is obvious that the Syrian conflict is needed by the Masters of the World.

Time to take cyberwarfare seriously. (1)

Over the past decade the United States and Iran have transformed the definition of traditional warfare, offering the international community a glimpse into what future wars will look like. In the past decade, both countries have bolstered their cyber arsenals, launching sophisticated assaults on each other's computer networks, financial services, and sensitive infrastructure.

The United States may have been more successful, but Iran is catching up. When these cyberattacks escalate, they may have a serious humanitarian impact. Yet, international law has so far failed to addressing the cyberwar domain. Some may still regard cyberwar and cybersecurity as the "stuff" you see in summer blockbusters, but in reality both are serious, perplexing, and scary.

miguel de Portugal comments: More serious and impacting than murdering innocent and helpless civil population?

What is good for Iran is not good for Syria?

Since innocent and helpless civil population are not being murdered in Iran, they must be stopped from exercising their sovereign right even if it takes cyber weapons. If their crimes were genocidal, then, from the logic being used, that would be a different story and cyber weapons should not be used.

Do we need to call Daniel to interpret the above two news reports?

Protecting the grid from geomagnetic storms. (1)

A geomagnetic storm disrupts the Earth's magnetic field by producing geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) on the Earth's surface, which can enter the power grid at transformer stations and move along power lines, disrupting normal operations.

A geomagnetic storm would reach Earth between fourteen and ninety-six hours, leaving little time to safeguard critical infrastructure. U.S. regulators are drafting reliability standards and procedures to protect the U.S. power grid from such storms.

There is no agreement among industry experts about the damage the power grid would suffer as a result of a large geomagnetic storm, but regulators have taken a proactive approach by issuing Order 779 on May 2013. The order issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), instructs the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) to launch a two-stage planning process.

miguel de Portugal comments: Well, at least they are thinking about it.... although that is as far as they will get.

Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapon arsenal back in the early nineties. (1)

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the newly independent Ukraine had on its territory what was the third largest strategic nuclear weapons arsenal in the world. It was larger than those of Britain, France, and China combined.

On June 1, 1996 Ukraine became a non-nuclear nation when it sent the last of its 1,900 strategic nuclear warheads to Russia for dismantling. The first shipment of nuclear weapons from Ukraine to Russia (by train) was in March 1994.

In return for giving up its nuclear weapons, Ukraine, the United States of America, Russia, and the United Kingdom signed the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, pledging to respect Ukraine territorial integrity.

Treaty Content. (2)

According to the memorandum, Russia, the USA, and the UK confirmed, in recognition of Ukraine becoming party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and in effect abandoning its nuclear arsenal to Russia, that they would:

Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty within its existing borders.
Refrain from the threat or use of force against Ukraine.
Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine in order to influence its politics.
Seek United Nations Security Council action if nuclear weapons are used against Ukraine.
Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against Ukraine.
Consult with one another if questions arise regarding these commitments.

miguel de Portugal comments:
As almost a first grader can see, Russia is wiping its boots with the treaty because they know that neither the U.S. nor the U.K., nor the wimpy NATO and UN Security Council will do anything to stop them.

As we have said many times, the Western Powers - led by the US - have become, since World War II (the last war we won), the Paper Tiger China equated us with some years back.

Unless those Western Powers rise to the occasion, they will be shining Russian boots until God steps in and re-boots the world.... but then again, that's part of the schedule. (3)

In the meantime, do you realize what impact this will have in the negotiations with Iran seeking that they give up their nuclear dreams with the guarantee (what a joke!) that the Western Powers will protect them? In other words, the negotiators should pack up their bags and go home because a snow ball will have a better chance in hell than the chance of Iran now giving up their nuclear dream.

Merkel gets Putin to accept "fact-finding" mission to Ukraine. (1)

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russia's President Vladimir Putin have engaged in some telephone diplomacy over Ukraine, with Putin reportedly accepting a Merkel proposal for a fact-finding mission to open a political dialogue in Ukraine, possibly under the auspices of the Organisation for Co-operation and Security in Europe.

NATO also convened an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss its options. While its Secretary-General did not announce any hard measures, he repeated Russia's military deployment was a violation of international law, and deplored the Russian parliament's approval of the use of force.

"We call on Russia to de-escalate tensions. We call upon Russia to honour all its international commitments, to withdraw its forces to its bases and to refrain for any interference elsewhere in Ukraine," Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.

miguel de Portugal comments: The wimps respond with the usual non committal "fact finding mission", discussing options and much hand wringing - outside of that, just spending taxpayers money. None of that has solved a single problem yet in recent memory; it just delays them while they fester and become worse.

What next? The U.N. Secretary general appearing on TV looking intently at a photograph of Putin while saying: Bad, boy! Bad, boy!  Naughty, naughty!

If these pathetic leaders had been in charge in the early forties we would now be speaking Japanese with a German accent OR German with a Japanese accent!

But then again.... all of this is according to schedule.

I anxiously await at the Pulling-of-the-Plug by God.

War In Crimea: Lock On, The Video Game That Foresaw It 11 Years Ago
In 2003, Ukraine, independent since the 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union, was calm. The Orange Revolution, the first stirring of the sentiments that would lead to the current upheaval, was still a year away.

The world then was focused instead on Iraq, where a U.S.- led invasion had opened a new front in America's global war on terror. And yet that year, a group of Russian video-game designers came up with a scenario for a future Ukrainian war that looks chillingly prescient today.

In November 2003, Ubisoft Entertainment SA (EPA:UBI) released the first version of Lock On: Modern Air Combat, a complex flight-simulation game for the PC featuring ultra-realistic graphics and billed at the time as the world's best in its genre. Designed by the Moscow-based Eagle Dynamics, LOMAC -- as it became known among flight-simulation devotees -- featured a ground and naval war as well as air combat.

And it was set in Crimea. More than a decade before Russian forces and Ukrainian army units would face off there, LOMAC imagined a world where the Black Sea peninsula was the theater of a conflict between the U.S. plus its NATO allies and Russia.

Matthew McConaughey Acknowledging the Grace of God Sparks Backlash. (1)

.... Matthew McConaughey took home the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ron Woodroof in the early-AIDS-crisis drama "Dallas Buyers Club." During his impassioned acceptance speech, the 44-year-old Texas native took a rare (and temporary) detour from the typical self-congratulations that permeate the film-industry kudofest and waded into more spiritual terrain:

"First off I want to thank God, because he's the one I look up to. He's graced my life with opportunities, which I know are not of my hand or any other human kind. He has shown me that it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Laughton, who said, 'When you got God you got a friend and that friend is you.'"

It wasn't so much McConaughey's shout-out to the almighty that got people talking, but rather the awkward silence and sparse applause that followed, an uncomfortable void that many commentators saw as indicative of Hollywood's discomfort with all things pious.

miguel de Portugal comments: Now, Stop and Think!

Hollywood - These are the people who have been, yes, brainwashing the world through films for nearly a century. Can you now recognize what has been the most powerful tool that satan has had at his disposal for the last one hundred years? A tool that was amplified many times over with the advent of television, and then taken to practically infinity with violent and immoral video games.

And where was God, as some dare to ask? Waiting for the prayers and fasting (*) which would have turned the world around.... but never came.

(*) But this kind is not cast out but by prayer and fasting. [Matt. 17:20]

Fake Research Papers: How Did More Than 120 'Gibberish' Computer-Generated Studies Get Published? (1)
Two journals have plenty of tough questions to answer for after it was discovered that 120 published research papers were computer-generated and essentially "gibberish." The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and Springer, a publisher of scientific journals and research, agreed to remove more than 120 fake studies following an investigation by Cyril Labbe of Joseph Fourier University.

Labbe spent two years analyzing research papers and discovered that more than 120 conference proceedings, as well as research papers attached to specific conferences, were published in 30 different journals, reports Nature. This occurred over the course of five years, from 2008 to 2013, and 16 studies were published in Springer journals and in journals published by the IEEE.

According to Slate, the source of the problem is a prank devised in 2005 by students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. MIT students created a program, SCIgen, that could create fake research papers as a way to test the review process for conferences.

The program is free and can be downloaded by anyone to create a fake research paper.

miguel de Portugal comments: Do you now understand what we mean when we express our ever increasing disdain for today's "scientists" and "experts" (exceptions noted, of course)?

Even the editors of those "scientific" publications were so intellectually limited that they could not spot the fake research papers.

The question is: How much "scientific" work has already been based on those bogus research reports?

Candy Crush Mobile Game App Provides Much-Needed Distraction For War-Weary Syrians. (1)

Suhail has a small addiction and feels no shame about it.

Every day, the stay-at-home mother of four quickly finishes her household chores so that she can "sit down and play Candy Crush."

"It's my time. My hour. I'm hooked, and I love it," she says as she offers her guests coffee in her living room. She is referring to one of the cell-phone games that are popular these days among ordinary Damascenes in the war-torn city.

The average person in the Syrian capital has a few such games downloaded on his or her cell phone, and people can be seen playing solo while doing all sorts of things, like walking down the street, sitting in traffic at checkpoints, or waiting to see the dentist.

Suhail sometimes plays the game at the expense of tending to her 2-year-old daughter. Or so her sister alleges.

"The other day I saw this with my own eyes," says the sister, half-heartedly confronting Suhail. "You were so busy playing, and your baby wanted to go potty, and instead of putting down your game and taking care of your child, you told Lara to take care of the baby and you just kept playing," she adds, referring to Suhail’s 8-year-old daughter, who sometimes helps care for the toddler.

Suhail seems unfazed by the accusation, and in a twist of irony, her cell phone rings right at that moment. It's a friend asking if Suhail has received her request "to send an extra life or two" for Candy. The game sometimes freezes out a player for hours unless a fellow player sends "a life" -- an exchange that takes place on Facebook.

"Yes, yes, I'll get it to you. Don't worry, I haven't forgotten," Suhail tells her friend over the phone. A few moments later, she excuses herself from her guests to send "the lives."

"Sorry, but it's urgent," she explains, looking sheepish.

miguel de Portugal comments: Just what the world needed: Electronically assisted denial!

As I become fully aware of what I must, as part of my function, it has changed me from someone who was be crushed by the thought of what awaits the world, to someone who anxiously and joyfully looks forward to the near annihilation of the world..... because, through the Grace of God, I know that it is the best that can happen in order for a few not to lose their souls. And unless those days had been shortened, no flesh should be saved: but for the sake of the elect those days shall be shortened. [Matt. 24:22]

The White House announced Thursday that the U.S. government is imposing visa restrictions on Russians and others who it says are "threatening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine," as Congress moves on a separate track to impose more sanctions.

As Iran's Revolution Turns 35, Former U.S. Embassy In Tehran Remains Popular Rallying Point -- And Tourist Site

In black chadors that cover them from head to toe, the women shuffle forth like a procession of nuns, occasionally whispering a few words and furtively taking snapshots with the reverence due a sacred place.

They walk past defaced renderings of the Statue of Liberty, a favorite target for smear, her face portrayed as a malign-looking skull with a caption, "The disgusting empire of Satan."

Further on, there is a mock statue of the statue with her entrails revealing prison bars, photos of children who died in Middle East wars, and communications machines that look like props from the original TV series “Mission: Impossible.”

All but two of the Iranians touring the former U.S. Embassy in Tehran were born after the popular revolt led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini toppled the last Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, in 1979. The majority were born to a nation ruled by clerics and by Shariah, Islamic canonic law.....,

Obama Is Complicit in Suppressing the Truth About Torture. (1)

On his watch, the CIA has been permitted to keep secret a report on its own misconduct, even as misleading information was released to the public.

President Obama is complicit in suppressing the truth about CIA torture of prisoners. That's clear from the fact that the Senate intelligence committee's $40 million, 6,000-page torture report is still being suppressed 15 months after being adopted. It is made clearer still by a scathing letter that one member of the committee, Senator Mark Udall, sent the White House on Tuesday. Its claims are jaw-dropping.

Senator Udall wants the torture report released to the public as fully and quickly as possible. He is also interested in a separate CIA report about torture of prisoners.

His letter makes all of the following charges:

Lots of information already given to the public about the CIA's torture program, its management, and its effectiveness "is misleading and inaccurate."
The Obama Administration itself has declassified and publicly released torture information that "contains inaccurate characterizations of CIA programs."
The CIA's internal review of its torture program contradicts what it told the oversight committee.
The CIA is erecting "impediments and obstacles" to its overseers.

Finally, and perhaps most alarmingly, Udall cryptically writes to Obama, "As you are aware, the CIA has recently taken unprecedented action against the Committee in relation to the internal CIA review, and I find these actions to be incredibly troubling for the Committee's oversight responsibilities and for our democracy."

Moose dying in Minnesota at alarming rate; climate change cited as cause. (1)

A New York Times piece published this week takes a look at rapidly declining moose populations across the country, with particular attention paid to Minnesota. (2)

Minnesota has two geographically distinct moose populations, one in the far northwestern part of the state and the other in the arrowhead. According to the NYT, both populations have rapidly declined in recent years. The one in the northwest "has virtually disappeared since the 1990s," the NYT writes, with that population dropping to less than 100 from 4,000.

In the arrowhead, the number of moose is declining by 25 percent a year, down to less than 3,000 from 8,000 in the late 1990s. As a result, all moose hunting in the state has been suspended.

The exact cause of the decline remains subject to debate, but experts cite climate change as one of the main factors.

miguel de Portugal comments: Just like the disappearing bees.... they do not have a clue!

For those "experts" to cite climate change as a main factor they must know why the moose are dying.... and they do not! These "experts" must have based their research work on those bogus research publications we spoke about recently.

News Report No. 1
On Saturday, March 8th, we sent the following communcation to major Media outlets in the US and Europe, as well as to the White House:

Ladies/Gentlemen considering the US/Russia stand off over Ukraine, shouldn't you alert your readership
("citizens" for the White House copy) that Russia has had their latest mobile strategic missiles "Oak" in Cuba since early 2012?

Read on and act upon it for the benefit of your readers.

The M+G+R Foundation

Russia has set their latest mobile strategic nuclear missiles "Oak" in Cuba on May 2012.

After the meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama, Putin made a sudden harsh statement to the press.  (1)

"In 2001 I, as the President of the Russian Federation and the supreme commander, deemed it advantageous to withdraw the radio-electronic center Lourdes from Cuba. In exchange for this, George Bush, the then U.S. president, has assured me that this decision would become the final confirmation that the Cold War was over and both of our states, getting rid of the relics of the Cold War, will start building a new relationship based on cooperation and transparency. In particular, Bush has convinced me that the U.S. missile defense system will never be deployed in Eastern Europe.

The Russian Federation has fulfilled all terms of the agreement. And even more. I shut down not only the Cuban Lourdes but also Kamran in Vietnam. I shut them down because I gave my word of honor. I, like a man, has kept my word. What have the Americans done? The Americans are not responsible for their own words. It is no secret that in recent years, the U.S. created a buffer zone around Russia, involving in this process not only the countries of Central Europe, but also the Baltic states, Ukraine and the Caucasus.

The only response to this could be an asymmetric expansion of the Russian military presence abroad, particularly in Cuba. In Cuba, there are convenient bays for our reconnaissance and warships, a network of the so-called "jump airfields." With the full consent of the Cuban leadership, on May 11 of this year, our country has not only resumed work in the electronic center of Lourdes, but also placed the latest mobile strategic nuclear missiles "Oak" on the island. They (the US) did not want to do it the amicable way, now let them deal with this," Putin said.

Gerona, Tarlac church introduces 'drive-through' visit of the Blessed Sacrament. (1)

Tarlac Bishop Florentino Cinense recently decreed that the parish of Sto. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer in Gerona town be the diocesan shrine of the Opus Dei founder, the first in Asia and the Philippines dedicated to the saint.

Cinense formally declared the decree on Feb. 14 before some 2,000 people at the completed church along MacArthur National Highway in Gerona, Tarlac.

Bishop Cinense established the parish in February 2003. ....And so, from temporary facilities in the Barangay Magaspac Hall in 2003, it has now become “one of the most aesthetically notable churches in the diocese of Tarlac,” Bishop Cinense added.

Concelebrating with Bishop Cinense were Bishop Jack Jose of Urdaneta, Pangasinan; Bishop Roberto Mallari of San Jose, Nueva Ecija; Msgr. Carlos Estrada, regional vicar of Opus Dei in the Philippines, and 40 other priests from the diocese of Tarlac.

The church features a revolutionary concept - what Father Bautista calls a "drive-through" visit to the Blessed Sacrament.

The back of the main tabernacle of the church has a glass window, making it visible from the driveway running through the back of the church. "From the highway, you can go around and stop at the back of this tabernacle, and you can visit without leaving your car," said Fr. Bautista.

Bishop Cinense invited motorists to visit the Blessed Sacrament.

miguel de Portugal comments: Considering the quality and depth of the "faith" of the escrivites, this is not surprising at all.

What should be done - and was done in a parish in West Palm beach, Florida - is setting a very small and secluded garden with a few stone benches facing a glass wall/window which is behind or on the sided of the Tabernacle. Then one can still Adore our Lord in calm and peace even when the church is closed, in a holy ambiance and not in a hamburger joint Drive-Through atmosphere.

As I have said before - one of the joys of Eternal Life with our Lord will be not to have to hear about these people any more.... and this is not a joke!

Editorial of National Catholic Register: Francis, you must meet victims of clergy abuse. (1)

The editors of NCR offer this open letter to Pope Francis:

Dear Pope Francis,

Warmest greetings from the heartland of the United States.

You must feel that the entire world is tugging at your sleeve with endless expectations. So it is only out of a sense of extreme urgency that we seek to intrude on your busy schedule and raise the issue of the sex abuse crisis. In a recent response to an inquiry, you acknowledged that the abuse is awful because it leaves "profound wounds."

Then, you added: "The statistics of the phenomenon of violence against children are staggering, but show clearly that the vast majority of abuse happens in the family setting and neighborhood.

"The Catholic church is maybe the only public institution to have moved with transparency and responsibility. No one else has done more. Yet the church is the only one to be attacked."

Those statements contain a certain truth, but they also conceal the more difficult truths that have been embedded in this story since NCR began covering this awful chapter of church history in 1985. We claim a certain authority in addressing the issue because we have been investigating and analyzing the scandal for so long. Countless times we have heard the defense that most abuse of children occurs outside the church and that the church has done more than any other institution to become transparent and aggressive in preventing abuse.

The other side of that truth, Your Holiness, is that no other institution on earth had the means or the will to hide as much crime and sin for so long. The reality is that while the incidents of abuse of children are horrific, the larger and more persistent scandal is how many bishops and cardinals hid the sin, paid victims enormous sums of money to stay silent and refused to tell even their fellow bishops and priests of potential problems when they transferred troubled priests.

Unless this deep wound is attended to in a loving and understanding way - unless the world's pastor is able to attend compassionately to this horrible injustice within his own family - the wound will only continue to fester and dwarf all the other pastoral and institutional reforms you have initiated.

miguel de Portugal comments: Add Bergoglio to the list of those whom we will not have to hear about in Eternity. It has been almost a year and I am amply fed up with his antics and theatrics.

The only consolation is that he is being used to effectively separate the "wheat" from the "chaff".

Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. [Matthew 3:12]

Whose fan is in his hand, and he will purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. [Luke 3:17]

Think of him as a "chaff" magnet.

The sad part is that some of the Elect will be tricked into his side and will require much suffering before they finally fully open their eyes and ears and "run for their (Eternal) lives".

Who has not already heard about the Malaysian airplane "disappearance" at least fifty times since it happened? The real puzzle to us is what we hear in the news. For example:

1. The relatives are desperate awaiting news.

What news? Let's face it - they are all dead! Unless, of course, as someone has started to claim, they were abducted by Aliens.

2. They just disappeared from the radar; and

3. The radar may indicate that they had just turned around to return to the origination point.

I am certainly not a radar expert but.... in the early sixties I was earning $1.00 per hour manning a weather station radar at Texas A&M University for a project of the Meteorology Department. In those non digital days, we had an automatic camera that took a photograph of the screen at every sweep. That is, we had a visual record, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, of the cloud formations within our range. Now then, in today's super digital world I will not believe that there is not an image of ever sweep of every radar in operation in the world!

That is, someone has in hand the before and after disappearance screen shots of said radar. If fifty years ago I could tell you where a cloud was one sweep before a particular moment and where it was right after, how in the world these people play dumb about the radar information? They can tell you exactly, within the time it takes for a full sweep, when the plane disappeared.

Granted, whether it was a natural explosion due to a malfunction or a bomb - that is a different story: Pieces have to be recovered. That it was a missile strike? Well, that could have been if it was a missile which the above mentioned "very confused radar" did not see!

Which brings us to the glossed over news that....

U.S. military is not prepared for conducting cyber warfare: Cyber Command chief. (1)

The U.S. military is not prepared for conducting cyber warfare and needs to strengthen defenses against the growing threat of cyber attacks against both military systems and private infrastructure, Army Gen. Keith Alexander, head of Cyber Command and outgoing director of the National Security Agency, told Congress on Thursday.

"Those attacks are coming and I think those are near term and we're not ready for them," he said.

California farmers hire dowsers to find water. (1)

With California in the grips of drought, farmers throughout the state are using a mysterious and some say foolhardy tool for locating underground water: dowsers, or water witches.

Practitioners of dowsing use rudimentary tools - usually copper sticks or wooden "divining rods" that resemble large wishbones - and what they describe as a natural energy to find water or minerals hidden deep underground.

While both state and federal water scientists disapprove of dowsing, California "witchers" are busy as farmers seek to drill more groundwater wells due to the state's record drought that persists despite recent rain.

On a recent afternoon, standing in this family's Charles Krug vineyard holding two copper divining rods, Mondavi walked slowly forward through the dormant vines.

Air travel security... What was that again?

The security lapse of two passengers flying with stolen passports, passports which had been reported as stolen, and which Interpol publicly criticized, might have had nothing to do with what happened to the jet and its 239 passengers and crew, but it should be a real wake up call.

Ronald K. Noble, the secretary general of the International Criminal Police Organization, or Interpol, said, "It is clearly of great concern that any passenger was able to board an international flight using a stolen passport listed in Interpol's databases."

"This is a situation we had hoped never to see," he said, adding that too few countries systematically screen travelers with Interpol's Stolen and Lost Travel Documents database set up after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. "For years, Interpol has asked, 'Why should countries wait for a tragedy to put prudent security measures in place at borders and boarding gates?' "(1)

miguel de Portugal comments:
Airport security pats-down children before boarding a plane and we have people flying with passports which have been reported stolen and are listed in the Interpol Data Base... and which should be listed on the Data Base of every single airline with international routes.

Sarah Palin: Putin Is Out 'Wrestling Bears' While Obama Is Wearing 'Mom Jeans'   (1)

Former Gov. Sarah Palin is throwing her hat in with Russia President Vladimir Putin over U.S. President Barack Obama, at least when it comes to a bear wrestling contest.

Palin appeared on Sean Hannity’s nightly Fox News show, partly to criticize President Obama's image and handling of the Ukraine crisis and partly to gloat about her improbably correct 2008 prediction that Russian President (then Prime Minister) Vladimir Putin would invade Ukraine if Obama were elected. Speaking to Hannity, Palin claimed that Russia is no longer afraid of reprisal by the United States because of Obama’s alleged timidity.

According to Palin, Putin is a rough-and-tumble man's man, while Obama is seen as an effete leader in "mom jeans."

miguel de Portugal comments: I never thought that I would agree with anything Mrs. Palin would say, considering my profound dislike of her style, political and life.... but I must agree with her on this.

Some US dioceses report results of questionnaire. (1)

Lay Catholics who were given the chance to respond to a Vatican questionnaire on family-related issues greeted the opportunity with relish, but it may be that laypeople in just over a third of the nearly 200 Catholic dioceses in the U.S. were given that opportunity.

NCR found 78 dioceses with clear, easily accessible information about what the survey was and how Catholics could participate, either through online surveys, direct consultations (a bishop in Alaska hosted a town hall meeting) or parish input. Some bishops announced they would be consulting priest councils or other diocesan structures to gather responses to the questionnaire.

miguel de Portugal comments: We publish this in case any of our readers is interested in following it. To us the whole thing - the Roman Catholic Church Administration included - is a moot point. Feinstein shifts tone in calling out CIA search. (1)

Sen. Dianne Feinstein's outspoken criticism of "CIA interference" in a congressional investigation is in sharp contrast to her defense of an intelligence-gathering community that some say tramples on civil liberties.

Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, has fretted that the public was losing confidence "in the dedicated men and women of our intelligence community" because of a string of disclosures that she said often lacked important context. In particular, she has defended the National Security Agency's collection of massive amounts of phone records, revealed in detail by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden

Francis send a congratulatory telegram to head of Opus Dei. (1)

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Servant of God Alvaro del Portillo, Pope Francis has sent a telegram to Bishop Javier Echevarría, the current prelate of Opus Dei.

Quotes from telegram text:

On the occasion of the conference dedicated to the Venerable Bishop Alvaro del Portillo, first Chancellor of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, for the centennial of his birth, the Supreme Pontiff Francis sends his best wishes, with the hope that you will duly highlight the precious example of the life of the faithful follower and first successor of the holy founder of Opus Dei and promoter of this Pontifical University for the service of the Church.

He was a zealous priest, who combined an intense spiritual life founded on faithful adhesion to the rock who is Christ, with a generous apostolate as a pilgrim throughout the whole world, following in the footsteps of Saint Josemaria, and worthy of the biblical phrase from the Book of Proverbs: "Vir fidelis multum laudabitur" (Prov 28:20)

His Holiness exhorts you to imitate his humble, cheerful, hidden and silent life, but a life that was also determined to give testimony to the perennial newness of the Gospel, by announcing the universal call to holiness and the furthering through one's daily work of the salvation of all mankind.

etc., etc.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin
Secretary of State for His Holiness

miguel de Portugal comments:  God indeed has a sense of humor!

First, the alleged "rock upon which the Church was built", an alleged successor of Peter, again (Ratzinger has already done it before) admits that the rock is indeed Christ.

Secondly, the translation of the full Proverbs 28:20 follows. Notice what was left out when it was quoted.

"Vir fidelis multum laudabitur" means "A faithful person will be richly blessed" but the catch is that the whole of 28:20 verse reads as follows:

A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.

A Divine reminder to Opus Dei: one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.

Thirdly, since when is Bergoglio so formal?

Thank you, Lord!

Cyber war in Ukraine – business as usual for the Russian bear. (1)

In a war - declared or otherwise - bravery and perseverance are not enough. Communications are important. Effectiveness means being able to command your troops and gather information. It also means being able to trust your communications. Disrupting and distorting communications is a dark art, the "new black" in overt and covert conflict.

That's what we're seeing in Ukraine. Russia appears to be having a fine time covertly sabotaging Ukrainian networks.'

Disrupting communications is a traditional strategy. Lincoln's horsemen stripped Jefferson's telegraph lines in raids early in the U.S. Civil War. Churchill authorized cutting Atlantic cables to isolate the Kaiser the day after the United Kingdom declared war in 1914. Since then the "black art" has flourished.

miguel de Portugal comments: Of course, President Obama will not do that in Syria so as not to se a precedent.....

Now consider the following.

The Internet Anti Virus and Security system which is now being used as "a reference" every time one read news about hacking, infections, etc. is Kaspersky (2) which is the creation of a Russian - with its Global Headquarters in Moscow.

This product is being used more and more worldwide. They have many conveniences - even keeping all your passwords under "lock and key" so that no hacker can break into your "cookie jar". The problem is that Kaspersky owns the the lock and has a copy of the key of your "cookie jar".

Translating: As they gain exposure worldwide, more and more computers have their "security" system installed thus, more and more computers are technically at the beck and call of orders from the Russian Federation. Who is to say that right now, every computer that uses Kaspersky (ours included!) is not a Zombie Computer that could be activated from Moscow to do whatever they wish at the click of a mouse?

It is now that I see why God insisted that I view the movie The Net back in 1995 (at a time when I was no longer viewing any kind of movies outside of faith related ones). When I say "insisted" I mean it - I just could not get away from avoiding the "hints".

You may want to review the plot now. (3)

Ukraine Crisis Could Spark Third World War, Former Communist Party Leader And President Kravchuk Warns. (1)

It could be seen as saber rattling, fear-mongering or an astute prediction by a man with intimate knowledge of Ukrainian-Russian history, but Leonid Kravchuk is adamant that Russian President Vladimir Putin has strayed into potentially cataclysmic territory, and that the current showdown in Crimea could escalate into a world war.

In an interview with International Business Times, Kravchuk, who led Ukraine to independence in 1991 and became its first president, claimed there are already 18,000 Russian soldiers in his country and that a full-scale Russian invasion would cause Western powers - including NATO - to engage them militarily.
Sitting in his spacious office in Kiev, surrounded by decades' worth of Ukrainian mementoes and exquisite amber handicrafts as a motley crew of self-styled defenders awaits in nearby Maidan Square, Kravchuk said he sees disturbing parallels between the current crisis and the outbreak of World War II, when he was a 5-year-old boy whose family lived in the village of Velykyi Zhytyn.

Ukraine to go nuclear (1)

Ukraine may have to arm itself with nuclear weapons if the United States and other world powers refuse to enforce a security pact that obligates them to reverse the Moscow-backed takeover of Crimea, a member of the Ukraine parliament told USA TODAY.

The United States, Great Britain and Russia agreed in a pact "to assure Ukraine's territorial integrity" in return for Ukraine giving up a nuclear arsenal it inherited from the Soviet Union after declaring independence in 1991, said Pavlo Rizanenko, a member of the Ukrainian parliament.

"We gave up nuclear weapons because of this agreement," said Rizanenko, a member of the Udar Party headed by Vitali Klitschko, a candidate for president. "Now there's a strong sentiment in Ukraine that we made a big mistake."

miguel de Portugal comments: If there were enough time - not only Ukraine would go nuclear, but Iran would too plus all who were counting in the "might" of the Western Powers whose spine has obviously turned into a gelatinous substance.

As we have said over and over again - we are against any kind of violence - which certainly includes war, but, those who believe in violence and war should act their part and not be simple and pathetic pushovers - Paper Tigers, to quote China.

Then again.... let us not forget that the West's only way to get to the International Space Station is riding in a Russian space vehicle and that China is the country which owns the greatest percentage of the U.S. debt.

Against the Tide: The Radical Leadership of Pope Francis - the latest book by John L. Allen, Jr.

Pope Francis has fascinated the world with his humility, his compassion, and his radical vision for the Church. He has welcomed the homeless into the Vatican, embraced people with diseases, and shaken a complacent hierarchy. Shepherds, he said, should acquire the smell of the sheep.

In short, as he has urged young people to do, he swims against the tide.
John L. Allen, Jr., who has covered the Vatican for CNN, the National Catholic Reporter, and currently the Boston Globe, has been in the forefront of covering Pope Francis and understanding his mission. In Against the Tide, Allen reveals a pope who has fixed his sight on reform, on accountability and on the Church's Social Gospel. Allen shows how the pope's actions reach out to those who are disinterested, disenfranchised and lost — and how his leadership, while beginning a new era, has roots that stretch back 2000 years.

The Black Madonna and the Russian Problem. (1)
Last month, when Vladimir Putin ordered that the Black Madonna of Kazan (2), the holiest icon of the Russian Orthodox Church, be flown over the Black Sea, many believed he wished to secure blessings for the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

It was the first time the icon, or rather a copy of it, since the original was stolen and possibly destroyed in 1904, was deployed to bless a peaceful enterprise. Over the centuries, the "Black Virgin" has been taken to battlefields to bless Russian armies fighting Swedish, Polish, Turkish, Persian, French and German invaders.

Stalin sent it to Stalingrad in 1943 to ensure victory over the German invaders under Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus.

With Putin's troops in control of Crimea and threatening to move further into Ukraine, we now know that the icon was brought in to bless a military operation this time as well.

(With the West allowing it)...., Putin will see no reason why he should not pursue his dream of reviving the Soviet Empire wherever possible. In doing so he is acting within a tradition established since the 18th century, when Russia emerged as a power with a pathological fear of encirclement. That fear has always made Russia aggressive.

Casting itself as the "Third Rome" and the final defender of Christianity, Russian empire-builders claimed that their enterprise enjoyed divine blessing.

miguel de Portugal shares: After the Russian Revolution of 1917, there was speculation that the original icon was in fact preserved in St. Petersburg. Reportedly, an icon of Our Lady of Kazan was used in processions around Leningrad fortifications during the Siege of Leningrad.[3] There was a conflicting theory that the image had been sold by the Bolsheviks abroad. Although such theories were not accepted by the Russian Orthodox Church, a reputed original (one of several in existence) was acquired by the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima (2) and enshrined in Fátima, Portugal in the 1970s. The image proved to be a copy, dated by experts to ca. 1730.

In 1993, the icon from Fátima was given to Pope John Paul II, who took it to the Vatican and had it installed in his study, where he venerated it for eleven years. In his own words, "it has found a home with me and has accompanied my daily service to the Church with its motherly gaze." John Paul II wished to visit Moscow or Kazan to personally return the icon to the Russian Orthodox Church. When these efforts were blocked by the Moscow Patriarchate, the icon was presented to the Russian Church unconditionally in August 2004.[5] On August 26, 2004 it was exhibited for veneration on the altar of St. Peter's Basilica and then delivered to Moscow. On the next feast day of the holy icon, July 21, 2005, Patriarch Alexius II and Mintimer Shaymiev, the President of Tatarstan, placed it in the Annunciation Cathedral of the Kazan Kremlin. (3)

Russian Forces Seize Village in Ukraine. (1)

Russia hasn't seemed much interested in lowering tensions ahead of tomorrow's secession vote in Crimea, and such action reinforce the point. The Washington Post reports that Russian forces have seized the small village of Strilkove in Ukraine territory near Crimea, along with a gas-distribution station either in or near the village.

So does this qualify as an invasion of Ukraine, which Russia had promised wouldn't happen? Ukraine certainly thinks so, reports AP, with its foreign ministry declaring that it "reserves the right to use all necessary measures to stop the military invasion by Russia."
A Russian official said the military took action to save the gas facility from "terrorist attacks," reports the BBC.

After a Decade of War Abroad, a More Militarized Police Force at Home. (1)

On Sunday morning in East Williamsburg, NY, a joint Department of Homeland Security and NYPD raid of a drug ring was executed. The raid wasn't the big story though; rather it was the tactics used by the police that scared local residents. DHS moved in on a military MRAP, the vehicle designed for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to withstand improvised explosive device attacks, scaring local residents as they turned Brooklyn into downtown Fallujah.

Even more terrifying for residents, the snipers perched atop the MRAP putting laser sights on locals who were just looking out their windows at the commotion. This isn't a singular event or even unique to major cities, ask Nampa, Idaho. As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have winded down, police have actively recruited military personnel and equipment, turning domestic police departments into small battalions more suited for Kabul than Peoria.

Who Would Jesus Stone? (1)

The Rev. James Manning wants to stone all homosexuals. The pastor of Atlah Missionary Baptist Church in Harlem said as much in a recent YouTube video, where he called upon his fellow Christians to take up stones against gays or be guilty of "advocating lawlessness."

It is the law, he further claimed, "stoning of the homos is now in order; stoning is still the law." Jesus would want this, he concluded, and would himself stone gay people. And so all last week the message on the billboard outside his church read, "Jesus would Stone Homos."

This is the latest eruption of homophobia from Rev. Manning, who last month posted on the church's billboard, "Obama has released the homo demons on the black man. Look out black woman. A white homo may take your man." One gets the sense that he believes himself to be on a roll.

Greenland's ice loss nearly tripled in a decade. (1)

Sea levels will probably rise more now that the last remaining stable portion of Greenland's ice sheet - the world's second-largest - is no longer stable, a study says.

Scientists have known Greenland's ice sheet has been thinning for decades, but for the first time, they've found that's even occurring in its northeast region that had been stable for 25 years. Since 2003, the northeast's ice loss has nearly tripled.

Vatican rejects claims of Pope 'polling' Catholics on marriage. (1)

The director of the Holy See press office has clarified that Pope Francis has not presented a questionnaire to Catholics worldwide to consult on homosexual unions and divorced persons, as some news outlets have reported.

This assertion, made by Italian daily il Fatto Quotidiano among others, is "not true" and in fact the basis is "only a document sent to bishops' conferences throughout the world by the secretary general of the synod of bishops, Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri, in preparation for the synod of bishops,” Fr. Federico Lombardi told CNA Nov. 2.

He added that the synod, which will be held Oct. 5-19, 2014, will be dedicated to "the pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization." The synod will focus on pastoral responses to the problems of divorce and gay marriage, as well as other challenges to the health of families.

But on Nov. 1, the National Catholic Reporter characterized the document sent to bishops' conferences as "a Vatican survey asking (Catholics') opinions on church teachings."

A Gallup Poll Shows Crimeans Had Very Different Ideas About Russia Last Year. (1)
A public opinion poll taken in Crimea last year - before the referendum on Sunday that resulted in a 97 percent vote favoring secession from Ukraine and joining Russia - suggests that residents were far less enthusiastic about Russia then. In fact, less than one-quarter of respondents last year wanted to join Russia, while the majority was in favor of retaining Crimea's status as an autonomous region of Ukraine.

Western powers rejected the validity of the vote on Sunday. Crimea has been occupied de facto by Russian troops since late February.

Big asteroid will eclipse bright star early Thursday. (1)

Skywatchers, got ready to see a rare vanishing act - and didn't blink.

In the wee hours of Thursday, a 45-mile-wide asteroid will eclipse the brightest star in the Constellation Leo. The asteroid is 163 Erigone in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The star briefly disappearing will be Regulus.

This so-called occultation will last no more than 14 seconds, around 2 a.m. EDT. It could be as short as a fraction of a second.

What makes this unusual is the brightness of Regulus and the potential viewing audience. Weather permitting, the eclipse should be visible with the naked eye from New York City and elsewhere along a populated swath in the U.S. Northeast and eastern Canada.

Bleeding Virgin Mary Statue Sends Powerful Message To Onlookers. (1)

A Virgin Mary statue bleeds. Some gawk. Some snap photos. Others make the sign of the cross.

Even if the Blessed Mother's condition isn't of divine origin, her role in a PSA to stop violence against women in Brazil grabs plenty of attention.

The base of the bloody statue reveals the kicker, translated as, "This is reality for many Brazilian Marys." It then reminds viewers that women are sacred and provides a hotline number for those in need.

A provocative campaign in India recently depicted bruised and beaten Hindu goddesses in an attempt to call attention to domestic abuse in that country.

miguel de Portugal comments: Although that is a most worthy cause - which we fully support - the method used to call the public's attention to it harms the credibility of many genuine cases where a statue of Mary has shed blood, tears or scented oil from Her eyes.

His Fertility Advance Draws Ire. (1)

To most people, the word "mitochondria" is only dimly familiar, the answer to a test question in some bygone high-school biology class. But to Shoukhrat Mitalipov, the mysterious power producers inside every human cell are a lifelong obsession.

..... Dr. Mitalipov, 52, has shaken the field of genetics by perfecting a version of the world's tiniest surgery: removing the nucleus from a human egg and placing it into another. In doing so, this Soviet-born scientist has drawn the ire of bioethicists and the scrutiny of federal regulators.

The procedure is intended to help women conceive children without passing on genetic defects in their cellular mitochondria. Such mutations are rare, but they can cause severe problems, including neurological damage, heart failure and blindness.

"It was a major breakthrough," said Douglas C. Wallace, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. "He's an exceptionally talented person."

But the resulting baby would carry genetic material from three parents - the mother, the host egg's donor and the father - an outcome that ethicists have deplored.

That specter drew critics from all over the country to a hotel in suburban Maryland late last month, where Dr. Mitalipov tried to persuade a panel of experts convened by the Food and Drug Administration that the procedure, which he has pioneered in monkeys, was ready to test in people.

miguel de Portugal comments: Mary said in Fatima that unless they were stopped, Russia would spread its errors on a worldwide scale.... and this one is truly a major one. This man wants to short circuit the climax of Creation - the conception of a human being.

First of all.... meet President Putin:

Ten Surprising Facts About Vladimir Putin's Extraordinary Past  - Russian President Vladimir Putin has stood at the helm of Russian politics since 1999, rotating between the presidency and the prime minister's office. But before his fast rise to power, Putin spent most of his life far out of the limelight. (1)

With Putin at the center of several global crises, from Syria to Ukraine, The WorldPost takes a look back at the leader's surprising past.

1. Vladimir Putin grew up in a communal apartment shared by three families in St. Petersburg (then known as Leningrad), and he says he remembers hunting rats in the stairwell.

2. Putin's grandfather worked as a chef at Lenin's country house and later cooked for Stalin several times.

Russian Sanctions Could Hurt Boeing And Lockheed Unless Russia Leaves Crimea. (2)

As Russia's occupation of Crimea continues and U.S. sanctions against the former Soviet country start to take shape, there are worries in Congress about how sanctions could impact the Pentagon's $70 billion satellite launch program, which involves Russia and a joint venture between the Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) and Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Under the current arrangement, the United States has to pay Russia for rides to the International Space Station and use its engines to launch military and spy satellites of its own. This could be tricky for the U.S. as it's illegal for the U.S. or government-affiliated companies to use parts from potential future enemies of the country. It was the same law that caused outrage over the F-16 jet fighter, which had been assembled using parts from China. Russia could fall into the same category, given the events unfolding in Crimea.

And the "perfect confirmation" that Putin needed to support his claim that Ukraine is now in the hands of fascist....

Ukrainian TV boss assaulted and forced to resign by far-right Svoboda MPs. (1)

The head of Ukraine’s state TV company has been attacked by at least three MPs from the far-right Svoboda party and forced to resign.

Members of Svoboda barged their way into the offices of Aleksandr Panteleymonov, the acting president of the National Television Company of Ukraine on Tuesday night. They were angry that public broadcaster, First National Channel, had broadcast the Russian Parliament signing a treaty with Crimea on Tuesday.

Yelling and beating Panteleymonov around the head, the men accused him of serving Putin, while there were Ukrainians "dying at the hands of Russian occupiers" and called him "Moscow trash." They then forced him to sign a letter of resignation.

Ironically, one of the men involved in the assault was the deputy head of Ukraine’s committee on freedom of speech. Members of the Svoboda party filmed the attack and then posted it online.

miguel de Portugal comments: We should be able to understand now why the only response from the Western "Powers", when Putin orders us to "Squat!", will be: "Where and how low, master?"......

Mexico: Cartel Kidnapped Kids, Stole Their Organs (1)

Police in Mexico say they've uncovered a grisly scheme to kidnap children and sell their organs.

Authorities in the Western state of Michoacan revealed yesterday that they'd arrested Manuel Plancarte Gaspar, the nephew of one of the top leaders of the Knights Templar cartel, for his alleged involvement. Gaspar and his cohorts would allegedly take their young captives to rented homes with medical equipment and remove their organs.

Police said the cases dated back several years. Once word of the arrest broke, a leader in a local vigilante group told a radio station that several children had been rescued from a cartel van in his town.

"They were inside a refrigerated box, tightly wrapped in blankets," he said. All hailed from the same Mexico City school, and were abducted during a beach outing. The Templar cartel has for years been diversifying its operations beyond drugs; it now makes most of its money from illegal mining, logging, and extortion.

Russia Protests Estonia's Treatment Of Russian Minority, Echoing Pretext For Crimea Takeover. (2)

A day after annexing the Crimea, Russia signaled concern Wednesday at Estonia's treatment of its large ethnic Russian minority, echoing the pretext it used to intervene in Ukraine.

The Russian statement at the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva comes a day after Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet called on the European Union to ratchet up sanctions against Russia, and said an arms embargo should be one of the first issues on the agenda.

And to think that millions of our children have died or have been maimed in war to end the way we will!

Let us continue to pray.... for forgiveness, because nothing will stop, or cushion anymore, what is upon us!

First Hand News Report from Ukraine
[our highlights]

Introduction by miguel de Portugal

The following was sent to us by a close long term cooperator from Ukraine. It is a news update of the real situation there, not from a news media reporter but from a local professional and head of a young family.

Some updates about situation in Ukraine as of March 20th, 2014.

While it seems that real war was averted, chances of it are far from zero. Russia is still very actively trying to destabilize East and South of Ukraine to then invade it using military forces. Internal politics are under big stress too, because a lot of current people in power, who were an opposition during previous regime, are actually part of it. So people are very displeased and there is a non zero chance of yet another revolution, this time against current government - many corrupt schemes still exist and many people who should have been in jail long time ago are still not.

But more interesting are relationships with Russia and reaction from West, especially EU.

What I currently see is actually an absolute lack of reaction from EU. I have viewed news from Russia a bit closely in the past and am sad to acknowledge that reaction of EU is completely harmless. Some time ago Putin demanded that all people who belong to government of all levels should not have any money or own anything outside of Russia. So those "sanctions" are almost completely harmless, and even if they had owned something - this is done through offshore companies, not by having personal deposits. EU definitely knows this but, as I understand it, they wanted to give an impression for their people of "active confrontation with Russia".

Real sanctions like targeted sanctions against oligarchs companies are blocked by most countries - Britain, Germany, France and all the rest.

Reason is simple - this will also harm their economy a bit (like 2% of luxury houses in UK belong to Russians), because Russian elite don't live in Russia, they live in EU using all the money stolen from Russian people.

This is not a big surprise for us here in Ukraine because we saw exactly the same "silent support" of previous criminal regime of Yanukovych during Maidan days. The only reaction was varying level of "concern" statements from EU.

Interestingly enough, here in Ukraine nobody expected for the EU to take our side in this confrontation. What we expected is that the EU would do something about money of the regime which had clearly criminal (and bloody) origin - something proved by thousands of investigations of many individuals..... and that money was used to pay for criminals to kill us. We expected that EU would follow their own laws - not ours! But they did not.

Now we see a replay of this, but this time with Russia and, on a worldwide scale.

US reaction (oil reserves, arrest of one of the oligarchs, political build up, "warning" for Syria) was much more adequate, but too little - too late. Crimea is officially annexed.

The situation will definitely evolve and change, but annexation is a fact same as the reality that US and Britain (e.g. EU) failed to fulfill their obligations based on Budapest nuclear pact of 1994. For Ukraine it is a 4th month of confrontation with blind, emotion/reason-less force.

Honestly - this was and still is absolutely surreal. Now, the entire world will become a play field of this confrontation. Fortunately - nobody openly sided with Russia (yet...).

One of the Maidan lesson was to give correct names and characteristics to the events the world now witnesses.

As I see it - the nature of West reaction is not fear, it is greed. I hope I am wrong.

Hard to predict how countries from other parts of the world (Asia, South America, Middle East) will change their plans and goals, but I think it is safe to assume that all previous calculations and analyses are no longer true.

IRS monitor: $1 million phone scam 'largest ever'. (1)

If the phone rings and the caller says he represents the IRS, be suspicious. That's the warning from federal authorities, who on Thursday said a nationwide phone scam has stolen $1 million from thousands of unsuspecting people.

The impostor claims to be an Internal Revenue Service representative and tells "intended victims they owe taxes and must pay using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer," an IRS inspector general office said.

"The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver's license."

The IRS has received more than 20,000 reports about the scam.

China's "secret" Satellite Weapon. (1)

Last May, China launched a rocket into space, supposedly to release a "cloud of barium" 10,000 km (6,213 miles) in the air to research the magnetosphere. But Brian Weeden, a space analyst at the Secure World Foundation, has rounded up a growing body of evidence to suggest the launch was in fact the test of rocket designed to launch a "kinetic kill vehicle" to destroy enemy satellites.

Weeden's theory is based on publicly-available information, including an analysis of where debris from the rocket landed, satellite photography of the launch pad, and photos of the rocket plume posted by observers in Hong Kong:

Weeden says last May's rocket launch was actually a secret test of the first system that could be used to target satellites in high orbits. That's different from the anti-satellite weapons China has tested before, which analysts believe are designed to destroy satellites closer to earth. A botched 2007 test of of one of these weapons created a cloud of satellite debris that inspired the movie "Gravity."

miguel de Portugal comments:

(1) Obviously China does not care to set a precedent as President Obama does enabling the continuing genocide in Syria;
(2) Some people can pin point all details - including debris of rocket - of a secret mission, but we just don't seem to be able to find a missing passenger jet with  239 victims aboard;
(3) Whatever security that our low and high orbit satellites provides us is obviously null and void. More wasted taxpayers money without any results.

More idiocy! It must be in the air.... as the saying goes.

Pope Francis - bishop of Rome, sovereign of the Vatican City State, his holiness - has another title to add to his papal resume: Rolling Stone cover subject.

The pope graces the cover of the iconic music magazine this week for "The Times They Are A-Changin':

Inside the Pope's gentle revolution," a 7,700-word profile by contributing editor Mark Binelli, who went inside the Vatican to report on Francis' swift break from tradition.

"In less than a year since his papacy began, Pope Francis has done much to separate himself from past popes and establish himself as a people's pope," Binelli writes.

miguel de Portugal comments: God is my witness that if for some incredible statistical feat Rolling Stone magazine would honor me in one of their issues, they would have a law suit - for defamation of character - in their hands before the magazine hits the stands.

Pope to travel to Holy Land in May amid peace push. (1)

Pope Francis will travel to Israel, the West Bank and Jordan in May, his first visit to the Holy Land and one that comes amid a new U.S. push for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Francis told thousands gathered in the rain for his weekly Sunday blessing that "in the climate of joy that is typical of the Christmas season," he was announcing a visit May 24-26 to Amman, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. It is the only papal trip confirmed so far for 2014 and the second foreign trip of Francis' pontificate, following his 2013 visit to Brazil for World Youth Day.

Francis said his prime aim was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic meeting in Jerusalem between Pope Paul VI and the then-spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, Ecumenical Patriarch Atengora. Catholics and Orthodox have been divided since the Great Schism of 1054, precipitated largely by disagreements over the primacy of the pope.

Francis' full itinerary hasn't been released, but the pope's good friend, Rabbi Abraham Skorka, has said he hopes the pope will stop at the Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray in Jerusalem.

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Skorka said he also hoped to pray with Francis in Bethlehem "to show the world it is possible."

miguel de Portugal comments: What a photo op - Francis specialty!

(sarcasm on) Now, if he could kiss a deformed Jew while praying at the Wailing Wall, holding a Koran in his right hand while washing the feet of a Muslim female wearing a burka with his left hand, he would have the ultimate photo op! (sarcasm off)

Come Lord Jesus and purify this world - once and for all!

Russian military buildup raises likelihood of a Ukraine invasion. (1)

New US intelligence assessments warn there are more indications than ever that Russia could invade eastern Ukraine - and that Vladimir Putin's claims that Russian-speaking people in Ukraine face 'brutality' is a pretext for invasion.

Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday strongly urged President Obama to take a firmer stance against Russia.

miguel de Portugal comments: One "minor detail", as the saying goes, that the controlled world media has "forgotten" to remind the general pubic is that Putin owns Mr. Snowden (2) and with him all the National Security secrets of the US and its allies.

The only hope that the West has to stop Putin is prayer - just as it was done in Constantinople in the year 911 AD (3) - and that is our choice.

Militarily - a nuclear Shock and Awe attack which may transform the world into a pile of radioactive rubble.

Germany's 'Bishop of Bling' steps down.

Germany's so called 'Bishop of Bling' has been permanently removed from his diocese in Limburg by the Vatican.

Monsignor Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst was suspended in October for spending 31 million euros on renovating his official residence.

The head of Germany's Catholic Church Cardinal Reinhard Marx said lessons from the cleric's lavish spending had been learnt.

"One thing is clear, we will make a joint effort to considerably increase the level of transparency and supervision of church finances," said Marx.

In a statement, the Vatican said the Bishop could no longer carry out a 'fruitful exercise' of his ministry. Something which struck a cord in Limburg.

The Vatican has said the Bishop will be moved elsewhere. Since coming to power Pope Francis has urged Church officials to live simpler lives and get closer to the poor.

miguel de Portugal comments: (a) No lesson will be learned until God teaches it with an iron rod; (b) Why isn't Bergoglio correcting, in one fell swoop, similar abuses that have ocurred continuosly for 1600 years by converting to cash that they have stolen from the faithful and helping the poor? Someone should point out to him the great many photo-op's he would have then!

Shale may offer long-term home for nuclear waste. (1)

About 77,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel currently sit in temporary above-ground storage facilities, and it will remain dangerous for tens or hundreds of thousands of years or longer.

Experts say that since the U.S. government abandoned plans to develop a long-term nuclear-waste storage site at Yucca Mountain in Nevada in 2009, finding new long-term storage sites must be a priority. Shale deep under the Earth's surface could be a solution. France, Switzerland, and Belgium already have plans to use shale repositories to store nuclear waste long-term.

Shale, the source of the U.S. current natural gas boom, could help solve another energy problem: what to do with radioactive waste from nuclear power plants. The unique properties of the sedimentary rock and related clay-rich rocks make it ideal for storing the potentially dangerous spent fuel for millennia, according to a geologist studying possible storage sites who made a presentation here today.

miguel de Portugal comments: Not only they are ignoring the serious geological threat caused by fracking (extracting natural gas from deep under the Earth shale), now they want to store nuclear waste in the space that becomes available when the gas is extracted.

In reality they do not have time to implement such plan, but the fools obvioulsy have not even considered the consequences of a "Nuclear Earthquake". The earthquake generated by the fracking operations and the nuclear fall out from the nuclear waste "safely" stored in a nearby spent shale deposit.

Stolen babies, stolen lives, Spanish justice served cold. (1)

Stolen from their mothers at birth, sold to be brought up by another. We meet Juani and Paloma, two Spanish women caught up in Spain’s scandal of stolen babies. They're among many struggling to come to terms with crimes done to them and their biological parents decades ago.

Advocates say there were thousands of false adoptions, beginning during the Franco regime.

Money changed hands between doctors, nurses, priests, nuns and foster families - who didn't necessarily know the babies were stolen.

Juani, 48, wonders about her brother. He was delivered at the Santa Cristina Clinic in Madrid. But they told her mother he was stillborn. Juani thinks her brother is still alive somewhere.

miguel de Portugal comments: When many think of Spain they, enraptured, think of Catholicism and God. Just the tip of the make believe iceberg. The Catholic Church in Spain could give Bergoglio lessons on how to bamboozle the faithful.

The misery that one sees throughout Latin America - all of it! - can be traced back to the version of Catholicism Spaniards forced down the throats of the natives in Central and South America while they were stealing the continent blind. If, conversely, the real Catholic Faith had been applied in the New World, it would have turned into a Paradise.

For people in the United States, an extraordinary series of lunar eclipses is about to begin. (1)

The action starts on April 15th when the full Moon passes through the amber shadow of Earth, producing a midnight eclipse visible across North America.

So begins a lunar eclipse tetrad - a series of 4 consecutive total eclipses occurring at approximately six month intervals.

The total eclipse of April 15, 2014, will be followed by another on Oct. 8, 2014, and, on the following year, another on April 4, 2015, and another on Sept. 28, 2015.

"The most unique thing about the 2014-2015 tetrad is that all of them are visible for all or parts of the USA," says longtime NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak.

Russian Troops Massed at Ukraine Border Concern U.S. Officials. (1)

Well-armed Russian troops at the Ukrainian border are supposed to be conducting exercises, but they aren't.

The Russian government claims the thousands of troops massing on the border of Ukraine are merely conducting exercises, but U.S. officials have yet to see any evidence of that. U.S. military leaders instead worry the growing troop presence could lead to more problems in a region already stricken by precarious security.

"We've seen no specific indication that exercises are taking place," said Pentagon spokesman Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby on Thursday. He declined to comment on any specific estimates of Russian troops along the border, but said the number is in the thousands.

miguel de Portugal comments: Another reminder.

It is interesting - but not surprising - that Snowden's name has not been in the news recently (2) associated with the US-Russian crisis.
