The Last Set

The purpose of this News Commentary Section is to assist the faithful in recognizing the signs and lies of These End Times. Somehow, many self appointed Shepherds of These Times are trying to convince the faithful that the Apocalypse will be, using street slang, "a piece of cake" for them and "hell" for all others. They are led to believe that if they "do this" and "do that" they do not have a thing to worry about (of course, so long as that between the "do this" and the "do that" they send in a donation).

Others lead the faithful to believe that "All Is Well" and will continue to be, of course, as long as those donations keep coming in...

Spain celebrates beatification of Opus Dei leader. (1)

Once considered secretive, right-wing and cult-like, the group has been trying to foster a friendlier image in recent years

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Madrid on Saturday to witness the beatification of an early leader of the Roman Catholic organization Opus Dei. etc.

miguel de Portugal comments: The point of interest here is that the above quoted article was publsihed in the Times of Israel.

Quoting from their About Us page:

"The Times of Israel is a Jerusalem-based online newspaper founded in 2012 to document developments in Israel, the Middle East and around the Jewish world."

The article is quite pro-Opus Dei and pro-Pope. This should not come as a surprise now that....

...Shimon Peres, a patriarch of today's Israel, wants to leave a legacy. Most in this mode aim for things like monuments, memoirs and money. Peres’s aim is world peace. And in his opinion, Pope Francis, a man he calls "Holy Father," is the one to make it happen.

In an exclusive interview with the Catholic periodical, Famiglia Cristiana (The Christian Family), Peres divulged his plans: "Perhaps for the first time in history, the Holy Father is a leader not only respected by many people, but also by different religions and their leaders." (2)

The Head-Scratching Case of the Vanishing Bees. (1)

It was with a nod to this history that when bees suddenly and mysteriously began disappearing en masse in Britain several years ago, the phenomenon came to be known there as Mary Celeste Syndrome. Beekeepers in the U.S. country were similarly plagued. Honeybees, those versatile workhorses of pollination, were vanishing by the millions. They would leave their hives in search of nectar and pollen, and somehow never find their way home. On this side of the Atlantic, though, the flight of the bees was given a more prosaic name: colony collapse disorder.

What caused it remains as much of a head-scratcher...  but the serious consequences for American agriculture were clear. And thus it draws the attention of this week’s Retro Report, part of a series of video documentaries examining major news stories from the past and analyzing what has happened since.

The centrality of bees to our collective well-being is hard to overstate. They pollinate dozens of crops: apples, blueberries, avocados, soybeans, strawberries, you name it. Without honeybees, almond production in California would all but disappear. The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that nearly one-third of everything that Americans eat depends on bee pollination. Billions of dollars are at stake each year for farmers, ranchers and, of course, beekeepers.

miguel de Portugal comments: This is a very level headed and informative New York Times article with the proverbial bottom line being that....

"...more bees seem to be dying - from all causes, not just colony collapse - in the normal course of what are referred to as the 'winter loss' and the 'fall dwindle."  Where annual bee losses were once in the range of 5 percent to 10 percent, they are now more on the order of 30 percent. The fear is that this dying-off is too great for the country's ever-expanding agricultural needs.

All that we have are "theories" as to the reason; that is, it is ongoing and cannot be stopped yet since the cause still is unknown.

ISIS Baghdad March: Islamic State 1 Mile Away From Iraqi Capital (1)

The Islamic State group is allegedly closing in on Baghdad, according to a report from a vicar at Iraq's only Anglican church that claims the jihadists formerly known as ISIS are roughly one mile away from the Iraqi capital.

Airstrikes against ISIS targets were supposed to stop the group from taking Baghdad.

miguel de Portugal comments: What can we expect if an armed intruder at White House got all the way in to East Room? (2)

It seems that we will have to change our standard line from "Houston, we have a problem" to "I told you so!"

Assad retains secret caches of chemical weapons according to Israeli intelligence. (1)

Despite committing to dismantle and give up its chemical weapons - Syria was in possession of the world’s largest chemical weapons stock - President Bashar al-Assad’s regime still maintains a “residual” chemical weapons capacity, consisting of a few tons of the proscribed materials.

Israel's intelligence community has concluded that the Assad regime has decided to keep this reduced, but still formidable, chemical weapons capability, and has successfully concealed it from the inspectors of the UN chemical weapons watchdog who, a few weeks ago, have declared the chemical disarmament of Syria to be officially complete.

Israeli defense officials believe that these sarin gas weapons would likely be deployed if the Assad regime faced an imminent threat to its survival. The Syrian regime is continuing to use chemical weapons which were not covered by the U.S.-Russian chemical weapons disarmament agreement, especially chlorine gas.

Obama's Terrorism Alert System Has Never Issued a Public Warning - Ever! (1)

This month, as officials in the Obama administration trumpet new warnings about "credible" threats to the United States homeland, the long-ignored role of America's primary terror alert system is under serious scrutiny for the first time.

The National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS), a function of the massive Department of Homeland Security, didn't issue any public advisories this summer as Western passport holders took up jihad in Syria by the thousands and anti-American extremists carved out safe havens in Iraq. In fact, NTAS, the successor to the George W. Bush administration's color-coded Homeland Security Advisory System, has been silent for longer than most realize.

Since replacing the old system in 2011, it has not issued a single alert, bulletin or advisory to the American public. NTAS encourages Americans to check its website and social media feeds for "information about threats in specific places or for individuals exhibiting certain types of suspicious activity." But no alert has ever been posted to the website, the Twitter account has never tweeted, and the Facebook page is empty.

miguel de Portugal comments: There are only two plausible explanations for such silence: (a) The terrorist threats and events that we hear about through the media are nonexistent; or (b) The US population is being manipulated subconsciously to lower its guard.

It is obvious which one is the correct option, isn't it?

But read on, it even gets worse:

An Utterly Terrifying Risk Assessment of California's Next Big Earthquake   (1)

Scientists don't know when California's next great earthquake will strike, but they do know just about everything else about it, and the potential ramifications are terrifying: impotent rescue services, widespread fires, and no fresh water for months.

And yet California officials haven't done much to prepare for such an immense disaster, said Lucy Jones, a seismologist at the U.S. Geological Service, at TheAtlantic's CityLab 2014 summit in Los Angeles. “There's so much that science knows about what's going to happen, and we're seeing that not being used," she said.

Jones is working with the L.A. government to create a seismic-resilience plan, and she had a dire warning for other California cities that don't brace for the worst from the San Andreas fault. Behold, a couple of the most terrifying run-on sentences in existence:

"When the San Andreas earthquake happens in Southern California - and that's the most-likely big earthquake in the United States - we know that all of the transportation life lines, the electric systems, the water systems, the gas lines, that cross the San Andreas fault, exactly where they'll break and what will happen when they break. That hasn't gotten anybody to do anything about them. So here in Los Angeles, we get 85 percent of our water from outside the region - that means across the San Andreas fault - in aqueducts that will break, [and] we could tell you how many times they're going to break and that it's going to take 18 months to get them fixed again and we have six-months' supply of water on this side of the fault—when we're not in a drought and the reservoirs are full."

miguel de Portugal comments: On behalf of the U.S. we must say that the other major Western powers are in worse shape regarding on how to deal with a similar mega emergency. Subconsciously their "security blanket" is the option of calling on the U.S. for help should any catastrophe hit.

By the way - I was in West Pam Beach, Florida, when Hurricane Andrew hit Miami. A week later I was involved in humanitarian mission composed of almost 200 vehicles driving to Miami with supplies. Believe it or not, the army or national guard (do not recall which) cheered us when we arrived. A week after Andrew struck the authorities were still trying to get their act together. Then we had Katrina, then we had Rita, etc., etc. and the story was just the same.

Just remember, only God will not fail you!

While keeping in mind that... I did not learn that from a catechism book or form failed homilists! I have lived it, over and over again.

Police Warn Of 'Serious Consequences' If Hong Kong Protesters Occupy Government Buildings. (1)

Hong Kong police have warned protesters in the city of "serious consequences" if they carry out a threatened action to occupy government buildings.

According to the Associated Press, police spokesman Steve Hui told reporters that authorities wouldn't tolerate any illegal surrounding of government buildings and urged protesters to exercise restraint.

Student protesters had set a deadline of midnight local time (noon Thursday EDT) for Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying to step down. If he refused, the students said they would occupy government buildings.

miguel de Portugal comments: We do not think that the those who pull the protesters' string are fully aware who they are dealing with now.

They may be unpleasantly surprised. Not even the "almighty" Vatican has been able to crack the People's Republic of China openly or covertly!

The World's First Genetically Modified Babies Will Graduate High School. (1)

The first successful transfer of genetic material for this purpose was published in a U.S. medical journal in 1997 and then later cited in a Human Reproduction publication in 2001. Scientists injected 30 embryos in all with a third person's genetic material. The children who have been produced by this method actually have extra snippets of mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, from two mothers – meaning these babies technically have three parents.

It's still unclear whether all 30 babies turned out healthy.  The Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science (IRMS) at St Barnabas, participants of the experiment, finally began following up with at least 17 of the now teenagers earlier this year, according to the UK’s Independent. We’ve reached out to IRMS to get those follow up results but have not heard back yet.

miguel de Portugal comments: Let me see if I understand this clearly:

Researchers have been - obviously in the open - experimenting  with genetically modifying humans, in a wholesale scale, since at least 1997. Obviously through an uncontrolled experiment since since "It's still unclear whether all 30 babies turned out healthy".

Only God knows what else  they have done since then and are doing right now.

Lord have Mercy!

JPMorgan hack exposed data of 83 million, among biggest breaches in history. (1)

Names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of the holders of some 83 million households and small business accounts were exposed when computer systems at JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) were recently compromised by hackers, making it one of the biggest data breaches in history.

The bank revealed the scope of the previously disclosed breach on Thursday, saying that there was no evidence that account numbers, passwords, user IDs, birth dates or Social Security numbers had been stolen.

It added that it has not seen "unusual customer fraud" related to the attack which exposed contact information for 76 million households and 7 million small businesses.

The people affected are mostly account holders, but may also include former account holders and others who entered their contact information at the bank’s online and mobile sites, according to a bank spokeswoman.

Security experts outside of the bank warned that the breach could result in an increase in crime as scammers will likely attempt to use the stolen information to engage in various types of fraud.

The bank's customers should be on heightened alert for fraud, said Mark Rasch, a former federal cyber crimes prosecutor.

Tal Klein, vice president with the cybersecurity firm Adallom, said that the breach could undermine confidence in the security of banks and other companies that people assume are well protected from hackers.

"Criminals could literally take on the identities of these 83 million businesses and people. That's the biggest concern," he said.

"Until now the assumption has been that the companies that get breached are the ones that have poor security practices, but we know that JPMorgan had a good security program and that they invest heavily in this area," he said. "So what we are waking up to is that the fundamental nature of security is broken."

Still, JPMorgan advised customers on its website that it does not believe they need to change their passwords or account information.

miguel de Portugal final comments:
We simply do not believe their claim that "there was no evidence that account numbers, passwords, user IDs, birth dates or Social Security numbers had been stolen." They are the same ones who, before the hack, would reassure their customers  " that JPMorgan had a good security program and that they invest heavily in this area".

This should be the final wake up call of the complete insecurity of the Internet.

Air of mystery clouds nearly every aspect of synod on the family. (1)

An unmistakable air of expectation mixed with uncertainty pervaded the atmosphere here as Pope Francis prepared to open in early October his global meeting of Catholic bishops to discuss issues of contemporary family life.

As of now, nearly every aspect of how the event will unfold is unclear -- from how delicate questions like divorce and remarriage will be handled, to how much discussion will be allowed, to even if it will be known who is speaking each day inside the closed-door Oct. 5-19 Synod of Bishops.

But the one prelate who is chiefly responsible for shepherding the process said Wednesday that at least one thing is clear: The coming days would see an "opportunity to deal with existential issues," both for individual families and for the Catholic church at large.

Jesus comments:

And he said to them: Doth a candle come in to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?  For there is nothing hid, which shall not be made manifest: neither was it made secret, but that it may come abroadIf any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And he said to them: Take heed what you hear. In what measure you shall mete, it shall be measured to you again, and more shall be given to you. For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, that also which he hath shall be taken away from him. [Mark 4:21-25]

miguel de Portugal comments: Too late. The "horse" left the barn a long time ago so, whether the door is open or close, is quite immaterial.

The little faith left will be taken away unless it is solidly anchored by the Holy Spirit of God in the souls of the faithful.
